Jars have been one of the basic storage containers since the Yayoi period, but from the 5th century onward, they lost the compound mouth rims that had been a tradition since the Yayoi period, and became indistinguishable from jars. In western Japan, these vessels are round-bottomed, but in eastern Japan, flat-bottomed vessels are produced.
