This is a seed pot in the common sense of the word, but it has a wide mouth, which is probably why it was taken up as a water jar. It was used as a water jar by Takeno Shao’o, a major tea master in Sakai in the late Muromachi period (1336-1573). The inside box is inscribed on the back of the lid with “Daikokuan (Hanashoi)” by Shao’o and “Shikaraki suisashi, Honjyuubou with Shao’o” inscribed on the back of the lid. The shoulder is covered with a thin layer of ash, and the body is covered with an island-like kuchiba (decayed leaves) color. This type of sui-zashi is rare, and was probably chosen as a sui-zashi because of its interesting scenery. It is a Chungking specialty.
