Height 49.l cm, mouth diameter 17.4 cm, bottom diameter 17.0 cm
This is an imposing large octagonal jar, probably with a gong lid.
This jar is one of the oldest of this type of large jars in colors, and is estimated to have been made in the 1670s, from the end of the Kanbun Era to the Enpo Era.
It has an octahedron from the mouth to the base of the body, and the bamboo joint-shaped base is circular.
The Ko-Imari agarwood jar style jars are characterized by the bamboo joint shaped base, while the Chinese jars are usually not made in the bamboo joint shape.
The white porcelain skin of this type of jar has a milky-white hand, which is unusual for this type of jar, and the lower part of the body is roughly pierced.
The neck is decorated with eight-petaled floral motifs arranged in eight directions in an arabesque style, and the shoulders are decorated with the characters “Shin” and “Kotobuki” (meaning “longevity” in Japanese) in alternating white in a kakusa-gama style window. The coloring of the overglaze painting, which is mainly red and green, is truly brilliant.
