Dish with Chinese figure design, blue and white

Dish with Chinese figure design, blue and white

Height 5.5 cm, mouth diameter 19.7 cm, base diameter 10.6 cm, Tokyo National Museum
This work was probably inspired by a Chinese story. The painting is filled with images of Chinese figures with houses in the background. The light lapis lazuli brush strokes are even and show a high level of underglaze blue technique. The reverse side is shown on the right, and the same technique is used on the reverse side of the 167th painting. Some of the color paintings also show the same reverse design, but all of them are of excellent workmanship. This type of work is excellent in all respects and probably dates to the Genroku period or earlier.
