The front of the lid of the inner box is inscribed “Kurita ware hanging flower vase, Shigarakute,” and the label on the back of the box identifies the autograph of Kanamori Sowa by Kohitsu Ryouchu. It is interesting to note that this is said to be made by Awataguchi ware, which was most active in Kyoto since the early Edo period (1603-1868), and the work seems to be of the early Edo period style. The body of this flattened vase is stepped, and it is made in the Shigaraki-style clay, with ash glaze from the mouth to the middle of the body, and mottled, u-shaped glaze drips. The overall shape of the vase is chunky and must have been made to suit the tastes of a tea ceremony master.
It must have been made according to the taste of tea masters.
