A cow lies down with what appears to be a herdsman’s hat on its back. The tea master also named it “kasa-gyu” (cow with hat) and placed it on the top of the incense container. The tea master also named it “Kasagiu” and placed it at the top of the incense container.
This incense container is all yellow, as indicated in the proviso, and only the shade is blue-glazed, giving it a florid color.
Among the higher-grade Cochin incense vases, relatively many of this type are imported, but only a few of them are all-yellow. Many of them are blue or purple in color, and sometimes the body and lid change color.
The author has seen several good incense containers of this type. One of the best examples from the Taisho era (1912-1926), when it was auctioned by the Nakamura family of Ganhans in Kyoto, remains in my mind’s eye.
This is only for reference, but a detailed examination may reveal a second importation.
