This incense container is a Cochin incense container that deserves to be appreciated, especially for the refined color of the yellow glaze. The blue glaze is colored like the shell of a crab, and the fact that it is as lovely as a ball in one’s hand is probably what makes this incense container so appealing to the eye.
The koban is an ancient Japanese treasure, a form that everyone appreciates, and the way this incense container has the shape of a crab holding a ball in its hands is truly commendable from a design standpoint. The koban is originally Japanese, and this coincidental encounter must have contributed to the excitement of the tea ceremony.
Some people believe that this incense container was also ordered by Kobori Enshu during his reign, but this would be incorrect. It has already been ranked in the upper ranks of the katamono kagai ranking list, proving that it was imported long ago.
The author has seen only two of the same type. One was in Osaka and belonged to the Fujita family, and the other of the same type was handed down from the Marquis Inoue family.
