Ōhi I: crow-shaped incense burner, black glaze

Height 17.8 cm, Length 41.7 cm
This bird-shaped incense burner is also renowned as one of the representative works of the First Generation Ōhi. While not as ingenious as Nisei’s “Pheasant Incense Burner,” it is a work brimming with power despite its simplicity. The back section, extending from the beak to the tail, serves as the lid, while the abdomen forms the body, supported by thick legs. A smoke vent is located on the back, and the entire piece is covered in a matte black glaze. This glaze is essentially the same as amber glaze; however, since the firing temperature did not reach the required level, the iron-rich amber glaze was left to cool as-is, resulting in this black glaze. The craftsmanship from the beak to the eyes is particularly outstanding.
