At first glance, this incense box appears to be a simple, rustic piece, but upon closer inspection, one can appreciate the superb sculptural skill of the First-Generation Ōhi. It features an intriguing design of clouds and a dragon, with the dragon’s head, body, and tail rendered in relief within the cloud forms. When the lid is opened, the body of the box is adorned with raised cloud-shaped patterns.
The dragon is rendered in relief, and while the interior likely received a thin application of amber glaze and the rest a thicker one during firing, the areas with the thin glaze have fired to an amber hue, while the rest have fired to a greenish black. This is a kōgō with a unique style not found in other Raku ware.
