This incense box is also one of the few pieces of the same shape that I have come into contact with.
This incense case has a yellowish yellow shell and a purple body. The other, however, which was handed down from the Konoike family, has a purple tortoise shell and a blue body.
In the Edo period, pure gold bullion was handled in the form of a bronze cast. Therefore, this shape was highly prized by merchant families as a bronze weight mold.
This type of bronze casting is of ancient Chinese origin, and was probably made for this kind of auspicious occasion.
The turtle shape on the lid is also associated with longevity, and this incense container is thought to have been treasured by merchant families.
