This incense container is called a “large lion”. It is placed in the front rank of the ranking chart, with Sohoku at the top. The imposing base is composed of a crouching lion, and the body is carved with lotus petals.
The body is carved with lotus petals. The size is the largest of all the Cochin incense containers, and because of its compact form, the dignified lion king’s fierce appearance is highly valued among the other types. In addition, this incense container is only available in one color, yellow, without other colored glazes, and is especially highly prized.
There are only a few yellow pieces in this color range, and those with a good overall coloring are highly prized.
Lion incense containers come in large, medium, and small sizes, as well as in different shapes such as mochiyu, but this large incense container is considered the best among them, perhaps because of its imposing appearance.
The author has seen two pieces of this type that are as excellent as this one. Interest in this type of incense container was much greater in the past than it is today. This is probably because there were few examples with such perfect shapes and colors.
