Height: 13.4 cm; Diameter: 16.4 × 19.9 cm; Tripod base
This is a representative work by Wazen, the son of Hozen. From the late Edo period through the Meiji era, Wazen emulated his father Hozen’s style—such as Kinrande—while also demonstrating his own unique ceramic techniques; together, father and son left a significant mark on Kyoto ware over two generations. One of Wazen’s signature design elements was the use of patterns inspired by the weave of textiles, and this fan-shaped ceramic tiered box is a prime example of this style. The lid features clove and flower-and-bird motifs, while the sides display large-scale cloisonné patterns, creating a sophisticated design that is quintessentially Kyoto-style. The underside of the base is left unglazed to reveal the clay, and the box stands on three low legs, with Wazen’s standard “Eiraku” seal stamped in the center.
