Tannyũ: tea bowl, known as “Tsuru no Yowai”, Red Raku

Height: 8.0 cm, Mouth Diameter: 10.7 cm, Foot Diameter: 4.8 cm
The inside of the lid of the inner box bears the inscription “Oniwayaki Red Tea Bowl, bestowed upon Okumura Kyūemon,” and the “Seinei” seal is stamped on the foot of the bowl, indicating that this is a tea bowl fired by Tannyū at the Kishū Oniwayaki Seineiken kiln. While the rim features varying heights and the interior is deeply carved, the overall design is gentle and unassuming. The footring is flat and unassuming, and the mark of ownership is stamped inside it. A transparent glaze has been applied over an ochre base, leaving the footring and its surroundings unglazed; the exterior features scattered fire-change patterns, resulting in a glaze finish characteristic of Taniri. On the underside of the lid, Kyuko-sai has inscribed “Kakurei Sosa (signature).”
