Ōhi VIII: tea bowl, amber glaze

Ōhi VIII: tea bowl, amber glaze

Height: 7.8 cm, Mouth Diameter: 11.5 cm, Foot Diameter: 5.2 cm
This thin-walled tea bowl shares a similar style to the “Kuro-shu” piece; it features a tapered body and an overall rounded form. The foot is shaped like a shiitake mushroom; a swirling kabuto-kin (helmet cloth) pattern is sharply carved into the interior of the foot, and a small tea pool is formed on the interior surface.
A thin layer of amber glaze covers the entire surface; in some areas, kiln changes have caused it to turn black like a haze, while other parts take on a grayish hue. The clearly visible carving marks also demonstrate a continuation of the distinctive style inherited from the first generation. The three types of seals used by Yatsushiro Ohhi Chōzaemon, stamped around the lower rim, likely imitate the practice of the Raku family of using a full set of seals. Additionally, the inscription “Koki-zō” is carved on the lower rim.
