This is a truly imposing large sake bottle. The slightly thickened neck of the mouth and the outwardly bulging rim are indicative of a slightly later period. The surface of the vessel is molded with rolled-up clay and has a brushwork finish. The upper half of the body has a slight cat’s brush pattern. The pottery is well finished, with a dark brown natural glaze over a light brown ground. The character “上” is engraved on the shoulder.
