It is said that Zonanbo was a person who treated the eyes of Emperor Gosakuramachi at a temple on Majima Island in Aichi District, Mikawa Province. Because Enshu had a connection with him through tea, he inscribed his name on this piece. It serves the same purpose as a gift tube for a tea scoop.
The flower vase is made of weathered bamboo and features an elegant, refined form. Although the inscription on the box, “Bamboo Flower Vase: Zonanbo,” is likely a label, it is a first-rate masterpiece by Enshu. Perhaps for this reason, even without the characters “Made by Sohu,” it is undoubtedly an outstanding work.
