inscribed in the fourth year of the Genkyu Era (1868)
Height 100.3cm, Bore 70.5-74.8cm, Body 84.5-85.0cm, Bottom 31.2cm
Tamba Antique Pottery Museum
This is a large jar with an inner rim and an engraved inscription on the shoulder: “Genkyu 4-nen” and “□□□ Gokujo Sanseki”. This type of large jar is not a part of the Tamba tradition, and the closest equivalent is a large jar from the Momoyama period in Bizen, or a large jar from the Hibe-gun Hidetani ware that seems to have been imitated. The period of Motokyu is not until April of the 3rd year, not the 4th year. Therefore, how to interpret this large jar is a difficult question, and must be left as an issue for the future.
