As Sue ware production began to spread to eastern Japan from the end of the 5th century to the 6th century, earthenware imitating Sue ware vessel forms began to be produced in the Kanto and Chubu mountainous regions, which were not blessed with sufficient clay. The cup is one such example, and like this vessel, the inner surface of the cup is coated with carbon grains.
