Asahi-yaki, along with Takatori, is counted among the seven kilns of Enshu, and is particularly prized by tea masters, but there is no historical record that Kobori Enshu favored the seven kilns. This is merely a tradition among tea masters.
It is likely that this was made during the late Tokugawa period.
Therefore, while this Asahi-yaki may have been related to Enshu, it cannot be classified as one of the seven kilns.
The “Asahi” mark is engraved within the swirling high foot. Since the practice of engraving marks on tea bowls began with Rinsho, this tea bowl should be considered a later work.
A distinctive feature is the single line drawn like a body strap on the lower part of the body, midway down the bowl.
