This incense container is ranked first in the maegashira ranking on the ranking list. It is also known as a “gleaming duck. It has also been called “hanaguidori,” or “flower-eating bird,” and has long been favored by the public. There are many duck incense containers, but I have not seen more than two of the same kind.
The color of the yellow glaze is highly prized because it is so vivid, beautiful, and bright when placed next to a charcoal funnel. Moreover, the yellow color is so vivid that no other colors can be seen, except for the sandalwood color (the color of gold leaf coated with tame-urushi lacquer) on the wings.
The best way to appreciate the beauty of this piece is to take it out of this jade incense container, place it in a furnace, and then, at the request of a guest, hold it in the palm of one’s hand and offer it to them for their viewing.
Formerly in the collection of the Akahoshi family, it came into the current owner’s collection in 1917 when the Akahoshi family auctioned off their collection.
