14th century
Height 60.7 cm, mouth diameter 40.7 cm, body diameter 60.5 cm, bottom diameter 18.7 cm
This is a typical large jar of the late Kamakura period with a wider rim band at the mouth rim. The shoulders are strongly stretched, and the body is slightly rounded and tapered toward the bottom. The molding was done in the yoriko-zukuri style, in which clay cords were rolled up to form the shape in five stages, and the surface of the vessel was adjusted with a wooden frame. The shoulder of this rare vessel is decorated in nine places with floral carvings made of half-cut bamboo tubes. The ware is extremely well fired, with a reddish-brown surface and a dark green natural glaze covering the mouth neck, shoulder and part of the body. It is a large jar with a neat form and rich in grandeur.
