This jar is commonly called a mottled karatsu jar. The shape is round and plump on the potter’s wheel, and the base has been cut out in a simple and careless manner. This is one of the simplest of all Karatsu jars, and was fired in the Hobashira kiln of the Kishidake kiln. This kind of white straw ash glaze has not been seen in Nansen so far, and it is assumed that it was started by a naturalized potter from Nansen, since there are similar pieces in Hoeyoung ware of Hokusen, etc. However, the clay taste and the shaping of the base are so similar to that of Dangjin in Hoeyoung ware. It is probably an early type of Karatsu ware.
