This incense container is ranked in the second rank of maegashira in the ranking chart, and is slightly lightly marked. However, it is interesting to note that the design looks like cherry blossoms falling on a carp, which is a nice touch to appreciate the mood of the piece.
The elegant coloring of the sandalwood on the all-yellow background was especially admired.
It was owned by the Shimabayashi family in Kanazawa at the end of the Edo period (1603-1867), and was popularized by the local tea masters.
There are other examples of the same type, but they are less well known because of their similar coloring.
The Fujita family’s collection may be the next in line.
The shape is somewhat similar to that of a jewel, and although it looks rather large in the illustration, it is interesting and compact.
