This is called a “jangkou gyu” (bull in a jar).
The name “jangkou-gyu” comes from the plump, protruding shell, on which a cow is girdled.
The cow in this kagai is crouched down. Sometimes the cow is gored in the opposite direction from that shown in the illustration.
Considering the large number of these types of incense containers that have come down through the ages, it is likely that they were ordered from Japan.
The side of the bowl is decorated with a hanshishi tsunagi-style design on the entire surface, and the “fire and earth” color on the reverse side contrasts well with the indigo color of the design. The shape and handling of this incense container are well suited for use in both halls and booths. How many people like it?
This incense container was also handed down from the Hirase family. Matsudaira Fumai also loved to have a copy of it made and kept it in his collection.
