This kagai with chrysanthemum crabs is ranked in the Sekiwake (western part of the ranking chart).
It has the same shape as the Cochin chrysanthemum crab mentioned above, and some tea masters in Osaka once used it as a replacement for the Cochin chrysanthemum crab by replacing the body and lid with one of the two. Some tea masters in Osaka used to enjoy the taste of this type of pottery. This is also evidence that both the body and lid were made in the same kiln.
The crab on the front of the lid, painted in indigo, is designed as if it were aiming at a ball, which is also the same as that on Cochin.
In China, the crab is decorated with chrysanthemum flowers and is called huajia, which is a Chinese word for auspiciousness. Chrysanthemums are chosen for the shape because they are auspicious flowers that symbolize longevity, and the Chinese character for “flower” is associated with the 61st year of the 60th year of life, which is why the crab was chosen for the front.
The white glaze on this incense container is particularly brilliant, and the indigo color of the gosu glaze is also richly added, creating a magnificent finish.
They are very few in number and highly prized. I have not seen more than two of the same type. I have seen a few examples with red painting on this base rarely.
