It is said to have been used for a long time as a rice chest. The top of the jar has a rounded rim with a thickened mouth rim that is warped outward in the shape of a shoulder or “raku” (a shape of a crook). The bottom of the bowl is first made, and then the clay strings are hammered on top of the bottom. It is very well fired, and the mouth rim is shiny black due to hand shifting. There is a thick “kama-jirushi” mark on the shoulder.
