The “Shiho-irikaku” shape, also known as “Ya-irikaku” in Japanese, is a unique form of Kuresu ware, in which the corners of a square are inserted to form an octagonal shape and the body is slightly bulging.
This form is also found in Cochin daiyu, which are generally decorated with floral designs in red and blue overglaze rubbed glaze, and rarely with pictures of rabbits on the front of the lid.
Since many of these sieve-shaped gosu incense containers were imported to Japan, it is assumed that they were exported not only to Japan but also to other countries.
Originally, this type of vessel was produced for export to the Middle and Near East, where it was in great demand, and it is thought that it was originally used as a medicine container.
Among these types of vessels, there are several types of round incense containers of various sizes. Tea masters select the most beautiful of these to use as incense containers, especially the smallest ones, called komaru.
