Commonly known as the Kinran Hexagonal Gourd, this flower vase has become particularly famous in the Kansai art world since the Sōken-an auction.
This style is called “Red-Ground Kinran Akadama,” and a large jar believed to be by the same artist can be seen at the Hakutsuru Art Museum.
Although it had long been unknown to the public since the Sōken-an auction, it reappeared on the market after the war. Several dealers banded together to purchase it for 2 million yen and formed a non-sale alliance, vowing not to sell it for less than 5 million yen. There is an anecdote that the previous head of the N family, a man known for his boldness in the art world at the time, bought this vase for exactly 5 million yen without haggling over a single yen.
